Our first game in the tournament was this afternoon at 5.20pm versus Bridgeport Premier FC. The boys just hung around the hotel, walked into the little town center to have lunch and just relaxed until we left for the match at 3.00pm. Our game was played on field 10, an astro turf ground, at Randall’s Island, which is quite a huge place with many sport fields. The game began quickly with us pressuring Bridgeport high up the field. This nearly paid dividends as early in the 4th minute when we had our first chance at goal. The ball was played across the goal from the right side by Shemar De Gannes, but no one got on the end of it as the ball went out for a throw. A couple of minutes later Bridgeport created their first attack, as they attacked up our right side. A harmless looking ball was played across our goal in the air and unfortunately an own goal occurred. 1-0 to Bridgeport.
The boys battled on valiantly putting that goal behind them and had control over the half, but lacked finishing power. Again from a counter attack from within their own half, Bridgeport passed the ball and profited from a mix up in defense which saw goal #2 being scored. At the half time whistle, the score read SKHY FC 0 Bridgeport FC 1.
The second half started with our boys showing much more confidence and again having the opposition backing up and defending for all they were worth. Bridgeport defended well, but opportunities were still created, which we squandered. In this half at least three clear cut chances were created which we failed to capitalize upon. Our goal came from a foul on Tevin Lessey in the opposition’s area, from a corner. A penalty was awarded, which Aaron Skeene put away for our lone goal. If football was like boxing and judged on points, we would have won comfortably, by a unanimous decision, for our percentage of possession, but it’s not so. Goals win matches and the opposition outscored us today, 1-2. Well done to them.
