Disney Cup: Day 5

SkhyFC and Escuela Athletico Nacional Columbia Under 13

Our U-13 team was first on the field this morning, playing at 9.45am. Their opponent was Escuela Athletico Nacional from Columbia. The speed at which both teams stated this game was unbelievable, with both teams enjoying an equal share of possession of the ball. Escuela Athletico’s midfield showed early on that they could be very creative, so SKHY’s midfielders had to tighten up and shut them down very quickly and this they did. As a matter of fact, from SKHY’s defensive aspect of the game, the players must be commended for how little room they allowed the opposition.

Escuela Athletico were no slouches either; they reciprocated in same, which made for a very exciting game. As the game progressed, SKHY began to dominate possession and by the second half had literally taken over the match. Unfortunately, they did not capitalize on any of the many opportunities which were created. The Escuela Athletico’s goal-keeper must also be commended as he kept his team in the game with some brilliant saves. The game ended 0 – 0. While victory should have been ours, but was not, the players must be commended for executing what was shown on the training pitch. You have made your coaches and managers proud.

Pardon the baseball expression, but the U-13 team really ‘stepped up to the plate’ today versus Dandy Town Youth Academy from Bermuda.

A game that was played at 11.30am. Coming from a goal down, the guys played their little hearts out to earn a hard fought 1-1 draw. After going behind from some loose marking the team started to defend and attack with purpose. Aidan Hayes (goal keeper) was at it once again with some exhilarating saves. One of those saves coming with literally seconds left in the match, he dove to his right to push a shot around the post.  Our goal scorer today was Daylon Riley. Special mention must be made of Joshua Mason who was slightly ‘under the weather’, but wanted to be with his team. He came off the bench and played a wonderful game.

In Costadeleste from Panama, our U-17’s were coming up against the team that is topping our group. So, we knew that we had to really have a good performance tp get the better of them. We needed at least a point to stay in the chase for a place in the knockout stage. The guys began well with intensity and determination. They came to play. Chances were created, with Aaron Skeene coming the closest crashing a shot from 25 yds against the crossbar. SKHY pressed forward forcing Costadeleste’s goal keeper into a number of saves, but he kept them at bay. Then, out of nowhere, totally against the run of play, a harm less looking free-kick was floated into the goal area which resulted in Costadeleste opening the scoring, 1-0.

Our boys were clearly dejected at this point, but it came five minutes to half time. After the half, they rallied themselves with the captains Chinua Bernard and Skeene chirping away all the time. In the second half it was nearly all one way traffic with Keyshaun Villafana, Kevin Wharfe, Tevin Lessey, Nicholas Emmanuel and Bixente Ragbeer leading the way. Tahj Devenish and Justin Brooks also put in yeomen service, but to no avail. Costadeleste’s keeper was a wall that we could not breach on this day. Hopefully in tomorrow’s game, our last, we can finish on a high note.
