Jovan Edwards
scored a sensational early goal to hand SKHY a winning start to their season, with
a 1-0 result, in their first game, over Trinity Rangers on Saturday evening. The
deadlock was broken in the 4th minute by the SKHY forward, with a curling left
footed strike from 30 yards.SKHY began the game without their captain Shakir
Cole, who was out due to illness. However, the team seemed not to be fazed by
the absence of its inspirational leader and they had Rangers on the back foot
from the first whistle.SKHY looked sharp in the early stages of the game. In
the 2nd minute striker Kevaugh John tested the Rangers defence with
an excellent run down the right flank and put in a cross which midfielder Kemo Toby
just failed to get a head on.
The early pressure paid off in the 4th minute, when
Christopher Yee Chan laid off the ball for Jovan down the right side. Jovan cut
inside with the ball on his left foot, steadied himself, then hit a tremendous
left footed shot into the top corner, to the right hand side of the goalkeeper,
who flung himself full length with arms outstretched but to no avail. The ball
hit the back of the net with the ferocity of a tsunami. Edwards’ strike was worthy
of winning any game.Trinity Rangers, slowly got into the game and
themselves had a few chances in the first half, but their forwards lacked the
composure to finish on target.
The second half of the match saw some
indifferent football from both teams. At times you would see some brilliance
and then another time one could have been left to wonder if these were two pick
up teams. In between this mixed bag of football both teams had opportunities.
On a couple of occasions this time, the Rangers strikers did hit the target,
but were foiled by some fine reflex saves from Tarik Hopkins, the SKHY
custodian.
In the 85th minute striker Kevaughn John had the chance to close out the game and ease the pressure on SKHY, when he received the ball and made a driving run past a Rangers defender, the covering defender then fouled him as he went past him also in the penalty area. Penalty! Kevaughn, who was last year’s top goal scorer took the penalty, but placed it wide of the upright. In the end Jovan’s strike proved to be the winner as the game finished 1-0. SKHY will be looking forward to another three points when they host Creek on Wednesday at 7.00pm at the Henry Street Recreation Ground, but they will definitely have to improve on this lackluster performance.
